There are many enterprises of this kind in the world, however in Poland it is the first such professional, private Amber Museum. Its mission is to educate and one of the tools of implementing it is the exhibition Amber - Its Beauty And History prepared by the Earth Museum by the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. The exhibition presents natural beauty of Baltic amber, which confirms its uniqueness and provides valuable knowledge about amber creation and history of its treatment. There is also an unusual arrangement which comprises of showcases with natural forms of this fossilised resin, combined with inspiring examples of their use in contemporary art, as well as potsherds set together with amber jewellery stylised to resemble old.
Showing the nature and history of amber through contemporary spectrum gives a completely different and more interesting perspective, and it this way it makes the stone interesting even for outsiders. Perhaps, now it will be easier to understand why so many people in the world are of the opinion that amber is the most beautiful of all the stones...?
As a part of the educational mission at the Amber Museum there is also an Amber Laboratory, where on a modern spectrometer - the only one in Cracow, and one out of three used for that purpose in entire Poland - amber authenticity tests are conducted. "Amber is valued and desired so much that more and more imitations and modifications occur, and those are becoming more and more difficult to identify. Bare eye and a magnifying glass are not sufficient to determine amber authenticity anymore, there's a need for advanced technology and we have it." - explains Tomasz Mikołajczyk.
In the heart of Cracow, on the surface of over 250 m2 the modern Amber Chamber has been created. In its elegant interiors museum exhibits tell the fascinating story of amber, and in the museum shop tradition mixes with modernity - from classic amber bead, through incredibly feminine necklaces and bracelets, to unique sculptures and usable objects. Guests who get tired after their tour around the Museum will be able to relax with a cup of delicious coffee and amber reading.
